"Nygard could take cheap shots at these folks; he doesn't. 'Trekkies'...is an affectionate look at a subculture that finds spiritual comfort and moral reliability in a fictional universe that, to the culture's members, often seems more real than the one in which they live. More desirable, anyway. It's not all about wearing funny clothes. Nygard interviews doctors, scientists, astronauts and engineers about how they were inspired by 'Star Trek' to pursue their careers. ... As movies go, 'Trekkies' isn't much. ... But the material is well-edited and amusing. One senses that Nygard is trying to be as inspiring as the entity he's celebrating. He mostly succeeds. ... You don't have to be a 'Star Trek' fanatic to enjoy Nygard's film, just a fan of human nature."
