Kansas City Star, Brian McTavish,
**,
"On one level, it seems like a serious endeavor. Director Roger Nygard tries to impart some understanding of the Trekkie phenomenon and its dream of equality for all people as inspired by the utopian ethic of "Star Trek." ... But on a more cynical level -- one apparently intended to elicit laughter and even groans of disbelief from the audience -- the film can be seen as a thinly veiled freak show whose ungracious appeal lies in making fun of those for whom "Star Trek" has literally become a way of life. ... Whether Trekkies is mostly life-affirming or derogatory depends on your point of view. But it's difficult to imagine too many Trekkies feeling good about being used as unwitting comedy fodder."
