Subject: Another Trekkie
Hi, My 11-year old son and I just watched "Trekkies"--it was just great! I
was fascinated by the lengths to which some fans take their love of "Trek",
something I was not quite aware of but can appreciate.
I've been a fan of Trek, especially the original series, since its inception,
thanks to my father who is still a Trek fan. He's always enjoyed sci-fi, and
passed that interest on to me and my two older brothers. But the most fascinating
thing for me is that he is also a (retired) aerospace engineer, who designed
parts for jet engines most of his career. However, the last position he held
was Team Leader for the main engines of the Space Shuttle, and I always think
of him as a real-life "Scotty"! Since I'm a "right-brain" person (I have my
own handweaving business), I feel I have a foot in both the scientific world
and the emotional world, so that may also be why ST inspires me. I've recently
taken an interest in astronomy.
Star Trek has inspired my imagination and like many, if not most, fans, gave
me a vision of a future I'd want for my children and their offspring. Perhaps
it was even the springboard for opening my heart to my faith as a Baha'i,
which embodies many of the principles Gene set forth in the series and which
now guides my daily life (e.g., elimination of prejudice, equality of women
and men, unity in diversity, and so on).
I am, admittedly, the big fan in my family and we just recently started attending
conventions, particularly DragonCon. My son actually prefers Star Wars and
our daughter, who is five, mostly just enjoys dressing up (she was a mermaid
in last year's costume contest). Anyway, I hope you do a sequel--looking forward
to it!!
Best regards,
Lynnea Stadelmann
